The big 3.0 -Birthday Afternoon Tea at Ritz Carlton

Ritz Carlton  New York (2014)

The milestone birthday of  3.0 arrived sooner than I thought and the only way I wanted to celebrate was doing my favourite thing – afternoon tea. I had my heart set on the Plaza Hotel – Palm Court however it was closed for renovation. So as a surprise my husband booked the next best thing- the Ritz Carlton.

When we entered the Ritz Carlton, we walked straight into the Star Lounge, where afternoon tea was being served.  We were served with a glass of champagne and tea to start with. It’s dimly lit and a bit dark but there was good lighting. Unfortunately we had no view of Central Park, however there was still a lovely quaint ambience.

The Tea

The tea served at Ritz Carlton is by a tea company, Tealeaves- a tea company I love and was delivered in big heavy silver pots. The old fashioned teapot look was nice and gave the high tea an authentic feel. As always, I ordered ‘English breakfast tea’. I find this tea goes nicely with all types of cakes and sandwiches and was of a good quality, so no complaints from me.

The Sandwiches

The sandwiches were actually refreshing, tasty  and were structured differently. The bread pieces were open with toppings such as cucumber, humous, egg, and roasted humous with olives. I thought this was a clever way to serve light yet tasty sandwiches.

The Scones

Each one of us got a gigantic raisin and sugar topped scone with Devonshire cream, lemon curd and strawberry jam from a jar. Was very yummy!

The Sweet Treats

These were colourful and a delight to eat. The petite fours were quite heavy however the small little red valet cakes which covered the first layer were just delicious as where the heavenly little Victoria sponge squares. Near the end of our tea service, I was also treated to a lovely desert with a birthday candle.

Final Thoughts and Details

I really enjoyed my time at Ritz Carlton. This was a lovely tea experience with good customer service. Afternoon tea cost $55 per person. Now having visited the Plaza Hotel- Palm Court, if you are looking for an expensive afternoon tea treat overlooking Central Park, I would recommend the Ritz Carlton over the Plaza Hotel.
